I've had an issue with my 92 LY's HWH leveler system not working for the last 2 weeks. I tried to call HWH about the problem but all I got was "we're very busy and we'll have a tech call you". I've been calling them every day for the last 5 days, but always get the same response and never a call back. First it's "Can you hold please..." and then its "we'll have a tech call you back". For the last 4 days I've never received a call back. I finally crawled under the unit to find the source of the problem. I discovered that one of the connectors to the jack was yanked out of the harness. Today I called them. I tried to explain that I've been told a tech will call me back with no response and their response was crazy bad. The person on the phone told me to "Hold your horses... We'll get with you when we can". I explained that I had already trouble shot the problem down to a ripped out warning switch connector on one of the jacks. All I needed was to have the connector identified and shipped to me for replacement. They said I would just have to wait for a tech to call me back then I heard the sound of disgust and then silence. When I asked to talk to a manager I was told that they were too busy for me and then they hung up.

Am I just catching them on a bad day or this normal for HWH? I just need a part. Why is it so hard to get a simple connector from them??

Before I get my Argosy, "George", painted, I want to address the roof. I have a few leaks. the main culprit is the Duo Therm AC unit. This unit originally had the Armstrong AC, then a Coleman AC, and recently a Duo Therm unit.

The unit sits between the spans and compresses the roof panels. The compression causes a big gap which lets in tons of water! The other issue is that the unit is flat and my roof is curved. You can also notice a really bad patch job near the front of the unit.

My other plans before painting call for a new Fan-Tastic fan and vent cover and a Jack TV antenna.

1) Is there a drip pan for Duo Therm Brick Air units to handle the rounded roof?

2) Should I build up the roof support to eliminate the roof compression? Right now I cut up some 2x4 pieces to minimize the compression.

Hello fellow airstreamers!

This is my first experience restoring a 1966 sovereign that was pretty oxydized.
Read the online posts and watched the utube videos on how to properly polish my pretty.

F7 was out of stock for a while so I started with F6 Nuvite on the heels of aircraft stripping.

Some parts shine right up, others are just dull and show streaks, not sure why.
Does not seem to be clear coat left.

Any advice?

Also have some lights out and read many discussions around pulling the dome to locate the harness.
Anyone knows where precisely it is located on a 31 footer? Does not show or either manuals.

Many thanks for any wisdom you can send my way!!!

We're headed out this weekend so I went down to Mr. Mod's shop to retrieve the AS today.
On the way home, I'm just getting reacclaimated to the TV and towing again since I haven't used either since our Oregon trip in early April.
About a 1/4 from the shop, a lady steps out in to the intersection against a red crossing signal. She and I enter the intersection at the same time which means we are VERY close to each other.
I stand on the horn and the brakes, naturally. I just missed her as she was running back to the curb.
I don't know how all the rubber stayed on the road, but it must have been a sight to see.

Sort of like, drifting...yeah, drifting with a 31 foot sled behind you.

Graceful, right?

In the backseat, is 3 year old, Johnny, who could only say 'Geez, Mommy! Take it easy!"

Anyhow, I'm sure she was late for whatever she was doing because I'm certain she had to go home to change her pants.

Either way, I'm sure tonight in her prayers, she'll be thanking God for the invention of the trailer brake. And my quick response and ability make a sideways trailer look like a dance.

I have a MagneTek 7455 Converter/Charger.

It came with our 2002 Bambi and has been trouble free since the trailer was new. The trailer has a single battery - we are now on our 2nd battery - an AGM Group 31 - it is now in its 5th season and has also been trouble free.

The trailer has been "awake" from its winterized mode for about a month - plugged in on shore power and working normally.

We dropped off the trailer a week ago for servicing - the safety valve on the oven needed to be replaced - have no idea whether this is part of the story or not - just seems an odd co-incidence ....

We picked the trailer up yesterday and spent last night in it - our first camping night of the season - we had shore power.

This morning I realized that the battery was not being charged - in fact, by the time I realized it the battery was pretty much dead. After checking all the fuses - I eventually found that the 2 30 amp fuses on the converter itself had blown. I replaced the two fuses and all seems normal - or close to it - as I type the voltmeter is reading 13.2 volts - which seems a bit low - it usually reads 13.6 volts when plugged in to shore power.

I'm a bit mystified wondering how or why these fuses might have blown - and if there is still a problem that needs to be found and rectified. Any advice or ideas?

Thanks,

They carry 5 cubic yards of topsoil and take her prize roses with them everywhere they go. She is quoted, “When we travel, I’m constantly getting compliments on my floribundas”. Just got The Donna ready to go and after a good wash noticed the side bathroom window was scattered the next day.
Hopefully no vandalism because its parked under cover well hidden on large property.
However I have been told that the dramatic rise in Temperature last week
35 C. and the cold water hosing could have contributed to the damage.
Does anyone know of a used or salvage place near me in Kamloops B.C. Canada ???
Spokane Airstream whom was very helpful told me only new windows including frame are available through factory parts department. Very pricey indeed,
$ 700.00 or more quote .
Thanks,

And it looks pretty good. The current owners are the second owners and have not been able to use it for a few years. I spent about an hour in it last night looking around, opening doors, tapping the floor, inspecting windows... There is a leak in one of the windows (the one straight in front of you when you walk in) and the floor was wet underneath it, but the floor did not seem soft. The outside looks great, as well. It does not have a lot of the rusted front belly that I have seen on most of them that I have looked at. Honestly, the only rusting that I found was in the bumper storage shelf. I have put a slideshow gallery here to share the photos that I took with my phone. Looking at the photos, I would really like to hear what some of you seasoned ASers have to say about it and what more I need to look for. I am going tomorrow night to see it "camp set up" to test all of the plumbing, electrical and so on.

As everyone, looking for ideas on flooring that is more durable than the plywood. I have seen masonite/harboard for cake boards, and in garage areas for the pegboard walls. While I have little experience with it, it seems to last a long time, and when it gets when it only seems to leave stains, though I have not seen it when left in a constant wet/leaky area.

If a guy were to put a double layer of this product on the floor, do you think it would be a better alternative than plywood, or is it just not suitable in this application. Were still new at all this, and just throwing out an idea looking for constructive criticism.
Thanks!

Hi Folks,

Any advice for getting air out of my water line? I have a 2008 16' Bambi that I de-winterized last night. I am getting mostly air coming out of the kitchen faucet but normal water flow in the bathroom.

I flushed and filled the fresh water tank, and with the water heater still in by-pass mode I turned on the pump and was able to get a strong stream of water at the kitchen sink and bathroom (toilet and shower). The same was true when hooked up to city water.

Then I set the valves so I wasn't by-passing the water heater, and the water heater filled. Now, however, I just get air or some sputters at the kitchen sink. The bathroom was unaffected and still works fine. Same is true if I use city water.

I also tried by-passing the water heater again, but I am getting the same results now: Air at the kitchen sink and normal/strong flow in the bathroom.

I am thinking there may be air trapped in the water line, but I'm not sure. I am noticing no leaks....

Heading out tonight for a weekend trip - any thoughts on how to fix?

Thanks!

Sadly, I can still count the numbers of Airstreams spotted on one hand, and at least two were mobile business conversions rather than caravaners. I've missed the enjoyment of RVing, and aluminum culture - fortunately this forum has kept me inspired.

We're moving back to the U.S. this fall, and the long hibernation on the jackstands will finally end for our Sport 22. :)

I have a 1971 Safari, tandem axle. This evening I noticed a section of aluminum has separated from the underside. To be more specific, there is a large square or rectangular metal framed section located on the bottom in back of the entry door and toward the center of the trailer. A piece of aluminum covered this section and was secured to the metal frame with screws. It appears the aluminum ripped off the screws in several places and one entire corner is hanging down. Above the aluminum, I can see what looks like some sort of fiberboard. It is not plywood. It is broken up/flakey and is sagging. If it is some sort of fiberboard and it got wet, I can understand how it may have swelled and the weight/pressure forced the protective aluminum sheet to tear away from the screws.

While I have had this trailer for almost 7 years, I have had very few problems with it, as it had been restored when I bought it. I do not have a lot of experience when it comes to repairing Airstreams.

My questions are;

- What does this metal framed section on the underside of the trailer provide
access to?
- Is it likely Airstream would have used a fiberboard or composite of some
sort rather than plywood?
- What's involved in repairing this?

So far the bellypan on the rest of the trailer looks fine.

Any input/suggestions are appreciated. Also, if anyone can recommend a repair resource for older Airstreams in NW Oregon/SW Washington, I'd like to hear about it. While there is a newer Airstream Dealer in Portland, I don't think their focus is repairing Airstreams of this age. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

Thanks,

The right side closet door refuses to stay inside its track. Every trip down the road means it will need to be put back in place when we reach our destination.

The bathroom door track has come "unscrewed" from the ceiling. I remounted it once, but after a few hundred miles it came out again.

The ceiling vent in the bathromm requires a gentle push upward to get it to open. I'm probably going to replace it with a Fantastic Fan.

The battery charger needs to be replaced because it only "knows" one speed; FULL SPEED!!! And since the batteries are now cooked they need to be replaced as well.
(yes I routinely check the water levels)

Oh, and I also had to replace the deadbolt lock since it jammed.

Apparently, the list will go on and on and on........

Oh yeah, the warranty just ended, too.

oh boy.........

It is a 1964 Tradewind - interior is gutted and all interior panels are removed and rear section of floor is removed - frame is in very good condition and am open to a shell on or a shell off - does anyone know of someone in wisconsin or illinois that does this type of work (person or buisness) -- please just respond or pm me and I will send you my phone number so we can talk and possibly figure about how much something like this will cost -- this has been a longtime dream of myself and my wife and i hate to have to discard it - any information would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance
If not does it have anything, or do I start from scratch? I'd sure appreciate any comments and information. Thanks.

We want to add a black tank under the toilet, preferably under the subfloor. We saw gray water tanks for vintage trailers on Vintage Trailer Supply. They fit between the frame members which is great. Can this tank also be used for black water or are the two types of tanks shaped differently?

I'm fairly certain I didn't have the right forum for this, I couldn't find a repair/fix blog, so if a mod wants to move it please do.

I've posted here before for some very basic advice, but now that I'm knee-deep and working pretty much 9-7 every day on this project, I thought I'd post some of the photos I've been using for my blog here, as well as to just share what's been going on.

The general story is that I purchased a 1966 Globetrotter from an awesome lady in Houston, with the idea of turning it into a professional studio quality photobooth for weddings and events in the Austin/Dallas/San Antonio/Houston area.

I had come back from the annual Professional Photographers of America convention with the intention of working on the general photography studio I've been running for about 4 years now. After a few days, I came up with this wacky idea using the Airstream. I think a lot of it had to do with the general impression of just how trailer business friendly Austin tends to be.

Anyways, as I'm sure most people here could confirm, it's been a lot more work than I had anticipated, and certainly a bit more money. I haven't even touched the electrical system yet, so I'm a bit worried on what that's going to cost me, but it's probably my last BIG expense. I hope.

The interior, except for the bathroom area has been removed, and I'm a good distance along with the interior carpentry work, with maybe a week left... I hope. I'm still dealing with various complicated cuts brought up by the curvaceous nature of trailer itself.

The wall closest to the bathroom area is where the computer, 32" touchscreen monitor, printer, and professional flash/camera unit will sit. Over the wheel wells I've built curved benches, which will have vinyl diner-style cushions. The monitor and camera are mounted to a heavy duty door, which can then swing open for work access, something inspired by a friend who works on Pinball machines. The back window will have a fairly standard LCD installed behind the newly replaced glass that plays a slideshow of images already taken from the current event.

The side wall where vents and doors for the fridge will shortly have a magnetic metal sheet placed to cover the holes up towards the highest roof vent. It will also have strips of chalkboard. People will be able to write, and place any extra photos they've taken there for the wedding clients to have at the end of the reception.

The area towards the hitch is where people will stand. I've built in some side walls that will serve as places for people to set drinks if they so wish, or just a place to lean. I don't think I've ever worked a wedding where people didn't have some sort of drink with them at any time. At the very front will be backdrop system that I can replace and change as the client wishes, though behind that cloth will be a storage area, as well as a speaker system for music.

The Airstream itself will be a wireless HotSpot, which will allow the music system to stream online music as a client may wish, and the computer will automatically upload photos to a website or Facebook gallery.

The biggest issue so far has been the window over the hitch. At some point before the previous owner, another person had removed the entire housing, and decided it was a good place to install a residential window-styled air conditioner. Every piece of hardware is gone, and the best solution I've come up with is to put a lit-from-behind sign with the logo over that area. If this was a typical restoration, I'm not sure how I would solve that problem because someone mangled the hell out of that area.

I've been trying to come up with a few fun ways to deal with various other exterior issues that wouldn't come up with a typical Airstream restoration. The heater vent cover is going to be replaced with a letterbox styled mailbox. The antenna is going to be used for various flags, most commonly Texas and UT flags I'm guessing. There was a poorly replaced panel repair under the small window opposite the door, and either a sign will be going there, or a removable planter. for flowers.

I did have to replace all of the windows in the unit, and since it was 1966... it has been quite an expensive chore. One of the bottom latches was completely missing, and about three of them had to be disassembled and repaired.

That's it for the story, I'll certainly have a few repair questions in the next few days. I really hope that this rather unusual take on an Airstream project is well met, and no one holds anything against me for not doing a straight restoration project.

So far this has honestly been one of the most rewarding projects of my life.

I am at the point where I have to wax the very front top panel. I weigh about 170lbs. Have any of you guys (or gals) stood on the cover? It looks pretty sturdy.

Hi everyone,

So we are really starting to get into our AS and the further we do the more we are leaning towards a full frame-off resto! I've been fighting it but I also know that we want to do it right if we are going to do it at all.

That being said, there's no better place to start than from the ground up, which starts at wheels and the axle.

We had contacted Andy at Inland inquiring about replacing our leaf axle with a new torsion axle but haven't heard back from him (yet).

What are your thoughts about the best direction to go? We're planning on going with a torsion axle but what about brakes? Is it worth it to go with discs? Is there anything else we should incorporate to make the set up safe and reliable? Are there pre-configured set-ups that we can order and bolt on?

Thanks for your help!

I just replaced countertops and I'm in process of installing both the galley and lavatory sinks.

In order to connect the drain to the new lavatory sink I had to install a new P-trap and lengthen the run by about an inch. Everything's hooked up, but the sink won't drain. I ran a snake (non-poisonous ;)) down the line from the auto-vent for approx. 10 feet. I'm sure I reached the grey tank. Hooked everything back up but it still doesn't drain. I poured water down my shower drain to make sure the holding tank wasn't full.

Any suggestions?
